Sandy Skoglund

Raining Popcorn

Sandy Skoglund was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1946.
She was educated at Smith College and the University of Iowa.
Skoglund teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
She resides and works in New York City.

Known for:
Large format Cibachrome photographs of her bright and humourously unsettling, room-sized installations that poke fun at suburban reality.

Most Popular Images:
"The Cocktail Party, 1992"; "Walking on Eggshells, 1997"; "Atomic Love, 1992";
"Radioactive Cats" (sold out); "Shimmering Madness"; "Revenge of the Goldfish" (sold out).

Did you know ... ?
• Sandy Skoglund spends 6 months to a year planning and creating each installation. Then she brings in her models for a one-day photo shoot before she dismantles her creation.

"I think I am most fond of the unseen part. I mean that the various cultural experiences that I go through, and the behavioral aspects of getting the work done, are just as important as the installation and the photograph. So, for me, the relationship between the two is more about hybridism and the search for an ideal form that I'm never going to arrive at. The installation and the photograph are mere approximations of this ideal."

General Format:
Large, Cibachrome photographs; typically 30" x 40" or larger.

How many photographs exist?
Skoglund limits her editions of each image to 30 photographs plus artist proofs.

Cibachrome photographs: $8,500 - $75,000
Sculptures: $3,500 - $8,000.

How are the photographs printed and signed?
Sandy Skoglund signs and numbers her photographs au recto in ink.

The first 10 in her edition are likely to be vintage photographs, meaning that they were printed within a year of the negative date.

True Fiction, 1986 - Portfolio of twenty, 20" x 24" Dye Transfer photographs. $12,000.
