Artists, musicians, politicians, writers, and scientistsÑthe influential heroes, heroines and even some of the villains of this timeÑhave sat before his revealing lens. By working consciously with the subjects, their objects, and surroundings, Newman created a new method for taking portraits: "enviromental portraiture." The result has been an amazing and vital body of photographs that place the sitter within the context of the world they lived in. This exhibition features new work, collages and Arnold Newman's classic photographs. "We don't take photographs with our cameras, we take them with our hearts and our minds. They are a reflection of ourselves, what we are, and what we think. Every artist is part of his work; otherwise, the work would be nothing more than a laundry list of objectsÑmindless, without passion, without meaning." ÑArnold Newman Arnold Newman was born in New York City in 1918. At a very young age, he showed a strong aptitude for the arts, which his family nurtured. His formal training in photography began in 1938. Newman worked diligently in commercial photography but pursued his own interests and experiments, with encouragment from Alfred Stieglitz and Beaumont Newhall. In 1945, his first one man exhibition opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Throughout his career he has worked for magazines, publishers, and individuals. He continues to be an active photographer, lecturer, and teacher. Arnold Newman's photographs have been displayed all over the world and are collected by museums and private collectors.
